MISSION
and
SERVICE
In keeping
with Christ’s teaching, we reach beyond our own to support a variety of
ministries to
our community and the world.
Olivet uses a Time and Talent Survey to enable members of
the community to share their gifts in ministry to
others. Similarly, we encourage a
faithful stewardship of our financial resources through pledging
that permits our ministry in this community and around the
world.
As a
congregation, we are directly involved in serving dinner at the
Salvation Army. The last date for 2007 is October 30th. The dates for 2008 are
Jan. 29, April 29, July 29, Sept. 30, and December 30.
We also build a house each year through Habitat for
Humanity, support missionaries, participate in hunger relief
activities, meet local emergency needs, and organize summer youth and
congregational mission trips.
The
senior-high youth traditionally participate in a mission trip to build
houses in Mexico every other year.
FELLOWSHIP
A
fellowship time is held after the 8:30 a.m.
worship service each Sunday. On
the last Sunday of each month, a
coffee/cookie fellowship is held in the Fellowship Hall following each
worship service (8:30, 9:45, and 11:00).
Olivet organizes several yearly gatherings such
as the annual Christmas Pageant and
Dinner, a spring barbeque called Olivet Day, and an end of the year summer
picnic.
A Church Family
Fellowship Supper is held on the 2nd Wednesday of most months, at
6:00 p.m. Brief programs or presentations of
congregational interest often accompany these
gatherings.
The women
of the church gather together several times during the year and meet in
three (3) smaller “circles” each month. The men of the church share breakfast together
on the 1st Friday of each month
at 7:00 a.m. Programs
for middle and high school aged youth include regular fellowship gatherings
on the 2nd and 4th Sundays and the following annual
events: October children’s games festival, December Washington mission
trip, January ski trip, February talent show, March youth retreat, and
summer canoeing and camping trips.
WORSHIP
The worship of God is at the heart of our lives
as Christians. In worship, we offer praise
and honor to god, are transformed and renewed as God’s children
and are empowered for God’s service in the world. Each Sunday, Olivet offers
the following services in the
Sanctuary:
8:30 a.m. –
Contemporary Service
9:45
a.m. – Chapel
Service
11:00
– Traditional Service
Music is critical to our
celebration of God’s Grace in our worship. In addition to
congregational singing, special music is provided by our adult
choir, 8:30
music team, soloists, instrumental meditations, and children’s choir.
Children’s worship
packets are available in the Narthex. A brief children’s sermon
is included in our 8:30 and 11:00
Sunday Worship Services. A
children’s workshop is available for children in grades K through 3
during the latter half of the 8:30 and 11:00
services. A children’s choir meets on Wednesday during
the fall.
A nursery
is available for children 4 and under.
The Sacrament of the
Lord’s Supper is celebrated on the 1st
Sunday of each month in our 8:30 service
and every other month in our 9:45 and 11:00 services.
Communion is also
shared at special services on Christmas Eve and Maundy
Thursday.
All, who have been
baptized, are welcome to participate in this sacrament, regardless
of church affiliation. Baptized
children who are being nurtured in the understanding of the sacrament
are welcome at the Lord’s Table s well.
